As a former professional ballet and modern dancer, I have been blessed to experience the benefits of a deeply entrenched regular practice of body awareness and self-care throughout my adult life. I began studying and practicing Raja Yoga in 1984 as a means to increase mental focus, and discovered that with the use of breathwork and meditation I was not only able to enhance my overall dance performance technique, but also found myself better equipped to deal with the stresses which were naturally involved with being a professional performing artist, including the management of both chronic pain and performance anxiety. My interest in the healing properties manifested through the combination of breath, focus and movement and my endless fascination with the inner workings of the human body, mind and spirit have led me on a decades- long journey which has included the study and practice of multiple styles of yoga, dance, taiji, qigong, pilates and other physical fitness techniques. Prior to Covid, this journey culminated in receiving my advanced teaching certification in Therapeutic Yoga, where I was formally trained in the styles of Yin, Restorative, Hatha, Ashtanga and Vinyasa yogas, as well as in working one-on-one to adapt therapeutic yoga practices for the individual.
Isolating during the pandemic further enhanced my already deep appreciation for the profound healing effect that simple human touch applied with compassionate intention can have on the body, mind, and spirit. I was fortunate at this time to have the opportunity to become certified in Marma Point Therapy, and through experimentation on myself and with my supportive family and friends, Yoga/Marma was born.
My goal in combining these two modalities in treatment is to offer a safe haven to anyone would like to experience an hour of gentle and compassionate touch-based healing, as well as to empower my clients in their self-care and to create space for them to recognize the miracle contained within their own perfect body’s innate ability to heal itself.
