Joan Barnett, R.P. Dip.IPEB: Registered Psychotherapist
CRPO # 004267
Hello, I’m a professional psychotherapist in private practice for 20 years, registered with the College of RegisteredPsychotherapists of Ontario, and a member of the Canadian Association for Psychodynamic Therapists (CAPT). I set out to provide a non-judgemental, safe harbour for building trust and heartfelt communication. Recognizing that we are all unique in our way of being and world of experience, I tailor sessions to be open to whatever emerges in the present moment. I work collaboratively and with compassion and empathy to help you uncover and synthesize deeply rooted protective patterns, find flexibility, courage and intimacy in your relationships, and change the story to one of belonging and self-love.
Whatever wounds are lodged within, keeping you stuck, frightened, angry, anxious, depressed—can be touched and healed. When you are experiencing grief, struggling with addiction, thrown off center by trauma, or feeling a profound sense of emptiness—we can make sense of it together.
My foundational training was in depth, psychodynamic, and body-based therapy with the Institute for Psychotherapy and Emotional Bodywork, where I taught for 7 years. To ensure that I provide informed care, I have been integrating this training with contemporary practices throughout my career. I received courses/workshops in approaches that include somatic experiencing, focusing and embodiment, relational neurobiology, parts theory, couples/relationship therapy, HSP, transgenerational trauma, mindfulness, expressive arts and dreamwork. This has given me rich and varied experiential material to personalize with each client.
Part of my past work history was in the social enterprise sector involving adults with developmental and Intellectual Disabilities. I followed four years at York U. in visual arts and women’s studies. My life, work, and educational experiences have opened my mind to the power-over dynamics that are as potent today as in our distant ancestors. I offer an anti-oppression practice that is embracing of diversity and intersectionality. A place where I challenge my own perceptions and seek personal consultation and supervision when needed. Meeting you on your journey with curiosity and compassion are at the heart of the therapy.
Tell me where you are having difficulty and we can determine together if this is the right fit.
